Camp STEEL was definitely a camp to remember, it taught each cadet about responsibility, courage, teamwork and confidence. All the Deyi cadets were split up into different platoons under different Platoon commanders (PC) and Assistant Platoon commanders (APC). I was under Sir Nathaniel, and he was one of the fiercest platoon commanders I’ve ever seen.
We did different activities; each of the activities gave us unique experiences regularly not experienced by others outside of NCC. Some cadets conquered their fear of heights as they participated in the High Elements; the high elements pushed us to overcome our fears. On the other end, some of us did rappelling and learnt basic safety drills.
Platoon 5 and 6 did rappelling while others did Orienteering and looked for checkpoints and navigated their separate teams with the help of a compass and maps. There was also a MOC, “Motivation Obstacle Course. “ There were different stations each with a different level of difficulty, ranging from rope climbing, crawling in sand, rope swinging, etc.
The main highlight for most cadets was handling the SAR-21 or Singapore Assault Rifle 21st Century. We were thought the basic drills for the SAR-21 and also told about safety protocols and how to operate the rifle.
