NCC Day Message

NATIONAL CADET CORPS DAY 2012
1 JULY 2012

MESSAGE FROM BRIGADIER-GENERAL (VOLUNTEER)
GOH KEE NGUAN
CHAIRMAN, NCC COUNCIL

Officers and Cadets of the NCC,

1. The National Cadet Corps (NCC) has come a long way since its humble beginning to become a premier Uniformed Group with a membership base of 18,000 members in our schools today. This year is another exciting year as we introduce more interesting and challenging programmes to add to the experiences of our cadets.

2. As part of our effort to provide practical leadership experiences for our members, cadet officers took up the challenge to organise the 12th NCC Affirmation Ceremony for 4, 000 Junior Cadets at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in April. Cadet Captain Clarence Jean from Bukit Batok Secondary School led this effort and he remarked that “it was an enriching experience for participants and organisers. We gained many life-skills like communications while working with different people of varying ages and background”. We have also renamed our Sec 1 to 4 cadets as Junior Cadets, Senior Cadets, Cadet Leaders and Senior Cadet Leaders respectively. This renaming signals our commitment to develop the leadership potential of our cadets at the various levels.

3. In February, NCC partnered the National Heritage Board to launch its first iPhone App for a new heritage trail. Cadet Officers under-went training to serve as facilitators for cadets embarking on this heritage trail. This partnership has provided new leadership opportunities for our cadet officers and also helped to enhance our National Education effort.

4. With the implementation of the NCC Transformation Masterplan, we have introduced many exciting NCC programmes within and beyond the shore of Singapore. The NCC Apex-I Club members climbed Mt Kinabalu last year and this year, they participated in white-water rafting and waterfall abseiling in Gopeng, Perak. In May, our Air cadets flew to Shanghai under a new international exchange programme with Ping Jiang Experimental School @ Suzhou. In July, we will be embarking on another new cadet exchange programme to Sydney, Australia.

5. In August this year, NCC will host the 2012 National Camp for Uniformed Groups in Pulau Tekong. 600 Youth leaders from the nine Uniformed Groups in Singapore will have the opportunities to interact, generate ideas and share aspirations for the UG movement. There will be many challenging activities to strengthen resilience and enhance their leadership skills.

6. We will continue to have a busy and exciting year and I would like to thank all Teachers, Cadet Officers and Cadets for your hard work and dedication in conducting all NCC events. I would also like to acknowledge the unwavering support and guidance of the Principals to the NCC units in your respective school. Your strong support and the allocation of essential resources at the school level have enabled our teacher officers to implement many programmes for the cadets.

7. To all cadets, continue to learn and gain from your time with the NCC. As we commemorate NCC Day, I urge you to reflect upon how you can build on your NCC experience and contribute further to your school and the community. Always remember to serve with Pride and Dedication as we build a NCC that is Nurturing, Committed and Cool!

8. Have a great NCC Day
